Offshore wind energy – up and running in 2009
Conference video – 5 minutes
WINDFORCE09 – DIRECTION OFFSHORE Conference The WINDFORCE09 – DIRECTION OFFSHORE Conference, held from 16 to 18 June 2009, was fully booked again this year and welcomed some 530 participants. Experts arrived from 13 countries to see and hear more than 40 lectures and presentations given on the two main days of the conference. Talks focused on developments in worker safety and the protection of wind turbines, offshore technology and projects in the sector.
Aerial photo Flags Lectures and presentations were offered in six major thematic groups during the conference. The conference focused this year especially on the safety of personnel and the protection of offshore wind turbines.

Large conference hall
Two separate excursions on 16 June served as a prelude to the conference, and 250 participants toured sites in Bremerhaven, Cuxhaven and Nordenham, visiting five different businesses and seeing developments in offshore technology first-hand, including wind turbine prototypes made by AREVA Multibrid and REpower Systems, and purpose-built offshore foundations in Bremerhaven. One stop was at the REpower Systems production hall, where turbines are being manufactured for Germany's alpha ventus test field and other sites. Other stops included visits to Germany's largest wind tunnel for analysing rotor blades at Deutsche WindGuard Engineering and the production site for offshore service ships at the Abeking&Rasmussen shipyard in Bremen's Fischereihafen industrial area.
REpower Systems Bremerhaven Cuxhaven Steel Construction
The excursion to Cuxhaven included visits to Ambau's production site for steel pipe towers and to Cuxhaven Steel Construction, where offshore foundations are manufactured for Bard. The excursion to Nordenham gave participants the opportunity to see submarine cables being manufactured at Norddeutsche Seekabelwerke.

The opening was followed by a panel discussion about "Offshore wind energy – an investment in the future to make structural changes and protect the climate". Members of the panel were Senator Loske, Professor Fritz Vahrenholt of RWE Innogy, Professor Claudia Kemfert of the German Institute for Economic Research (DIW), John Westwood of Douglas Westwood in the UK, and Edgar Scholz of AERVA T&D. Andreas Neumann of Radio Bremen TV chaired the discussion.

Participants afterwards had the opportunity at a champagne reception to continue the discussion and get to know each other.
At the opening of the first day of lectures and presentations on 17 June 2009, Udo Paschedag, head of the wind energy division in Germany's ministry for the environment, welcomed participants on behalf of Environment Minister Sigmar Gabriel, the patron of the conference.
Participants had the opportunity at the Maritime Wind Dinner on 17 June 2009 to continue ongoing talks and follow up on contacts made during the day while relaxing and enjoying the evening's entertainment. The Fassmer, Menck, and BLG Logistik companies and the F.W. Neukirch shipping company presented to the public the most recent developments in their businesses, displaying in an outdoor exhibition new products and services now available to the offshore wind industry.

The main topic of the conference was worker safety and the protection of wind turbines. In live demonstrations, Miller by Sperian showed how it can rescue personnel at great heights and the British company Reflex Marine showed how it uses a new personnel transport system, called TORO, on a crane hook. Participants had the chance to test this system themselves and enjoy a view over Bremerhaven and the North Sea from the crane.

Some 13 videos by offshore businesses were shown on an outdoor screen; these highlighted companies' developments in exploiting wind energy off the coast of the North Sea, making projects visible to the public.
On the second day of the conference, Udo Paschedag from Germany's environment ministry, and Jörg Schulz, the mayor of Bremerhaven, officially opened the exhibition ship run by the Offshore Wind Energy Foundation. This ship will tour Germany's harbour cities during the next three years, serving to inform the public about developments in the offshore wind power industry off Germany's North Sea and Baltic coasts.
